The “cabin”
This 8x8 structure was designed as a cooling station for a family holiday at a South Texas “ranchito”. This basic frame with a fabric roof and sides was inspired by vintage military tents. This prototype uses heavy duty tarps and screens to keep the rain and bugs out and the cool air in. It utilizes trailer jacks for quick and easy leveling. It can be assembled or disassembled by one body in a couple of hours. The versatility of the 8x8, 10, 12 or 16 dimensions can allow for a light weight pack-in, pack-out temporary structure or a permanent auxiliary dwelling. My little ones affectionally call it the "cabin” and it has been the base camp for many a sleepover. It’s more than a tent, it’s less than a house.
